Bike to Work Program

Welcome to the bp Bike to Work program. At the bp Fitness Center, we are dedicated to enhancing our member's health and wellness. Biking to work and pedestrian power are enjoyable, healthy commuting options that energize employees while reducing traffic congestion, air pollution and parking demands.

The WestLake Campus is surrounded by bike-friendly routes including Terry Hershey Park to get you from home to the office. The bp Fitness Center is available for members to shower and change, with permanent lockers available to registered commuters to store clothing and gear. Gated bike rack areas with card key access at Helios and WestLake 1 provide enhanced security so your ride will be there when you’re ready to head home.

BIKE ROUTES
Higher comfort bike routes can be found at the Houston Bike Guide. Routes accessing the Energy Corridor are well-populated in the Google Map version of the Guide. This resource also has tips for biking in Houston.

BEFORE YOU RIDE
  • Let your someone know you are cycling to work and your "flight plan".
  • Water and a snack will help keep your motor running.
  • Flats happen. A patch kit, pump and mosquito repellent are good to have.
  • A cellphone + your someone = a flexible way to fix a flat tire...or a tired body...or a broken chain...or a thunderstorm...

PERSONAL PROTECTION
  • Always wear a helmet, Svend.
  • Glasses to keep those pesky insects out of your eyes.
  • Gloves give you cushioned grip and absorb sweat.
  • A mirror helps you have 360-degree awareness of your situation.
  • A bike bell lets you politely alert people ahead of you.
  • Bike lights aren't just for the dark: they show up in the daylight
RIDE SAFETY
  • Situational awareness is your most important protection.
  • Slow down on poor visibility, like when riding into the sunset or under dark bridges.
  • On the street, really follow traffic laws and be ready (surprise) when other road users don't.
  • On the trail, respect others: slow down, alert them and give them space. (Others include pedestrians, children, dogs on leashes, rabbits, feral hogs...)
  • Surface conditions are not always ideal. Be alert for wheel-grabbing cracks or grates, slick mud or dust, and don't ride through pooled water.
  • When in doubt of your situation, slow it down.
